Abstract
A flame resistant rubber-like composition comprises a polymer or copolymer of vinyl chloride which is insoluble in a mixture of methyl isobutyl ketone and toluene, a plasticiser in an amount of from 25 to 55 per cent by weight of the composition, and antimony oxide, preferably the trioxide, in an amount of from 0.7 to 15 per cent by weight of the polymer and plasticiser. The vinyl chloride may be copolymerized with vinyl acetate, propionate, butyrate, hexoate, vinyl cyanide, vinylidene chloride, methyl-ethyl acrylate and styrene, using low temperatures, i.e. 40 DEG C., and oxidising catalysts and, if desired, in aqueous emulsion. Suitable plasticisers are di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, tri-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate, butyl phthalyl butyl glycollate, di-(beta-butoxyethyl) phthalate, acetyl tributyl citrate and tricresyl phosphate. Other compounds which may be added as heat stabilisers include litharge, white lead, lead stearate, and organo-metallic tin derivatives. The compositions which may also contain lubricants such as carbon black, mineral oil and cocoa butter are especially useful for insulating wires and tapes and may also be laminated in sheet form to fabrics. Solvents such as mesityl oxide, cyclohexanone and isophorone are used for casting films and also for sealing tapes made from the compositions. Specification 450,856 is referred to.
