Abstract

Motor spirits containing amines as anti-knock agents, and particularly those containing metallic anti-knock agents also, are stabilised by incorporating small quantities of a poly-alkyl phenol in which the para-position is filled by hydrogen or a methyl or an ethyl radical, and, of the two ortho-positions, one may be filled by a primary, secondary or tertiary alkyl while the other may be occupied by a primary or secondary alkyl. Phenols in which the alkyl radicals, which may be aryl substituted, contain not more than 16 or 20 carbon atoms are to be preferred. Poly-alkyl phenols particularly mentioned are 2 : 4 : 6-trimethyl, 2 : 6-dimethyl, 2 : 4-dimethyl-6-secondary butyl, 2 : 4-dimethyl-6-tertiary amyl, 2 : 4-dimethyl-6-tertiary octyl and 2 : 4-dimethyl-6-tertiary butyl phenols. Preferably alkylated mono-nuclear amines containing not more than 6 carbon atoms in all alkyl radicals are employed. In the case of motor spirits containing amines and tetra-alkyl lead 2 : 4-dimethyl-6-tertiary butyl phenol, which stabilises tetra-alkyl lead, is preferably employed together with another of the above phenols. Proportions of polyalkyl phenol and amine incorporated in the gasoline are .0001-0.1 per cent. by weight and 0.25-3 per cent. by volume, respectively. Amine solubilisers such as low molecular weight alcohols, ethers and ketones or aromatics such as benzene or toluene may be present. Gasolines containing metallic carbonyls may be stabilized by incorporating a mixture of the aforementioned mononuclear amines and poly-alkyl phenols. Specification 568,896 and U.S.A. Specifications 1,844,362 and 2,252,099 are referred to.ALSO:Amines, for use as addition agents for motor spirits, are stabilised by means of a poly-alkyl phenol in which the para-position is filled by a hydrogen or a methyl or an ethyl radical, and, of the two ortho-positions, one may be filled by a primary, secondary or tertiary alkyl while the other may be occupied by a primary or secondary alkyl. Preferred phenols are 2 : 4 : 6-trimethyl, 2 : 6 - dimethyl, 2 : 4 - dimethyl - 6 - secondary butyl, 2 : 4 - dimethyl - 6 - tertiary amyl, 2 : 4-dimethyl-6-tertiary octyl, or 2 : 4-dimethyl-6-tertiary butyl phenols. The phenol may be present in the proportion of 0.01 to 1 per cent by weight. Amines particularly mentioned are: aniline and substituted anilines, toluidines, xylidines, cumidine, pseudo-cumidine and cymidine. The results of light transmission tests on xylidine containing various addition agents are given. Specification 568,896 and U.S.A.Specifications 1,844,362 and 2,252,099 are referred to.
