Abstract

A material for use as electrical insulation or as a binder for mica flakes or other dielectric sheet or flake material to make electrical insulation is the resinous reaction product of 1 mol. of pentaerythritol, 1.5 mols. of maleic acid or anhydride (plus or minus 10 per cent) and 0.5 mols. of phthalic acid or anhydride (plus or minus 10 per cent). The materials are charged into a vessel equipped with reflux condenser and heated to 130 DEG C. in an atmosphere of carbon-dioxide or nitrogen. The temperature then rises rapidly due to reaction. Reaction is continued until an acid number of 220-280 is reached. The product should have a ball and tapered ring softening point of 50-80 DEG C. It is thermoplastic, but sets if treated at temperatures of 150-200 DEG C. It is soluble in acetone, ethanol, acetone-benzene, or ethanol-benzene. A solution containing 2-25 per cent by weight of resin is suitable for application to mica flakes. Flat sheets suitable for punching or cutting commutator or similar simply shaped insulation may be made with the aid of the resin (see Group V). Mica flakes mixed with resinous binder may also be moulded to specific shapes such as a V-ring for a dynamo-electric machine (see Group XXXV). When moulding the pentaerthyritol-maleate-phthalate resin, fillers such as silica, asbestos fibres or porcelain particles may be incorporated therewith. Synthetic mica or films of treated bentonite may also be cemented with the resinous material.
