Abstract
Alkali metal hydrides are obtained by hydrogenating molten alkali metal whilst in admixture with a finely divided solid material inert thereto and an alkali hydrocarbide or a hydrocarbon capable of reacting with an alkali metal to form such a hydrocarbide, the hydrocarbon or hydrocarbide containing at least 8 carbon atoms. The alkali metals specified are lithium, sodium, potassium, caesium, and rubidium. Suitable hydrocarbons are isomeric cymenes, isopropyl benzene, isomeric isopropyl naphthalenes and other aromatic hydrocarbons containing the isopropyl group; fluorene, indene, anthracene and their homologues; crude or partly refined petroleum products containing such hydrocarbons as kerosene, gasoline and petroleum oils, waxes and jellies. The reaction may be carried out at temperatures between the melting point of the metal and 600 DEG C., preferably between 200 DEG and 450 DEG C., and under atmospheric or increased pressures. Other gases which may be introduced with the hydrogen. Solid materials which may be mixed with the melt include sand, clays, powdered metals, wood charcoal, common salt, sodium carbonate, salts which are infusible at reaction temperatures, and the alkali hydride to be produced. Specifications 276,313, [Class 1 (ii)], and 405,017 are referred to.
