[Classes 52 (ii) and 52 (iii)] In an upholstered chair or like article of furniture the metal frame comprises unitary portions 1, 2, 3, detachably secured together of which. the back and/or side portions are of hollow box-like form having openings or panels to allow access to the interior to facilitate assembly the back and/or side portions 1, 2 comprising bent metal sheets 8, 4 riveted or welded to the flanges 9, 9a, 5, 5a of metal pressings 7, 7a, 6, 6a the edges 8a, 8b and 4a, being spaced apart. Depressions 6b in the pressings 6a constitute feet for the chair and upholstery springs 10 are located in stiffening depressions 11 in the pressing 8. The seat frame 3 is formed from channel section strip metal, the web 3b being bent to shape and the flange 3a which is mitred at the corners has a seat plate for supporting upholstery springs spot welded to it. Apertures 12, 12a, 13, 13a are provided so that the seat, back and side frames, previously upholstered with felt 14, provided with springs where necessary and inserted into prepared coverings may be bolted together. The upholstery 14 may be secured 'by glueing or to wooden tacking strips. The opening in the arm portion may have a hinged closure flap which may be adapted for use as a paper rack and a removable back square may be secured by a concealed catch spring. An alternative shape of arm frame and a head rest are described and shown.
