Abstract
583,953. Rack and pinion gearing. PARKIN, T. D. June 30, 1944, No. 12517. [Class 80 (i)] In a rack and pinion gearing in which a rack A is fixed .at one end B to a base and engaged by a pinion C, a more uniform meshing of the teeth is obtained by slitting the rack longitudinally to near the free end F, and also transversely at E', to obtain two portions D, E. The portion D is slightly bent so as to bring its free end F above the fixed end and the free end E<1> is raised above the fixed part B. In a modification, Fig. 5, the two portions D, E, are entirely separated and have fixed ends B, B' and free ends D', E'. Where the metal used is of such a nature that its resiliency cannot be relied upon, springs may be inserted between the bent-up parts and the base to which the rack is secured.
