[Class 107] In apparatus for heating road and like surfaces of the kind in which one or more fuel burners or electric heating elements are mounted on a vehicle traversable over the surface, each heating element is mounted on a carriage below the vehicle frame and is movable bodily with the carriage along a track on the vehicle. In the form shown, the heating elements comprise three oil burners within a rectangular hood 34, 35 carried by a platform 30 secured to the underside of the main frame members 25 of a carriage the uprights 27 of which carry rollers 29 bearing on the lower flanges of the channel section rail members 21 which are secured across the underside of the cantilever portions of two channel members 13 extending longitudinally of the vehicle. The burners are fed by flexible pipe lines from a fuel reservoir 16 and a compressor 18 driven by an engine 19. The carriage is moved along the rails 21 by means of a hand wheel 36 which operates an endless chain or cable anchored to a plate 43 attached to one of the frame members 25, and is held in a predetermined position by means of a ratchet device on the wheel 36. The hood 34, 35 is carried by crows feet 44 and cables 45 passing over drums 46, the shaft of which carries a worm wheel engaged by a worm shaft 50 which is rotated by a hand wheel 52 through the intermediary of a control shaft 51 and i cardan shaft 53 with universal joints 54.
