Abstract

Partially depolymerised dextrane is prepared by subjecting at least partially water soluble microbiologically produced dextranes to an acid hydrolytic treatment under controlled conditions of time temperature and acidity so that only partial breaking down of the starting material takes place. The product is isolated by any method known to be capable of separating as hydrolysis or degradation product from the hydrolysis or degradation reaction medium. The conditions of reaction are adjusted so that products are obtained which are completely water soluble and which at a concentration of 0.7 per cent in aqueous solution have a sedimentation constant of from 1.5 X 10-13 to 20 X 10-13 and a diffusion constant of from 0.2 X 107 to 8 X 107, and the relative viscosity of which at a concentration of 4 per cent in aqueous solution shows a value of from 1.5 to 15. The preferred reaction conditions comprise a treatment with dilute hydrochloric acid at temperatures of 30 DEG C.-150 DEG C. for less than 24 hours followed by dialysis of the solution. In examples a microbiologically produced dextrane is hydrolysed with dilute hydrochloric acid for varying periods, the product neutralised and precipitated with alcohol. It is then re-dissolved in water and dialysed in a cellophane bag against distilled water. The products are used as injection or infusion fluids either alone or in combination with other physiologically active salts.
