Abstract

583,246. Generating high frequency oscillations. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and DALY, C. T. July 14, 1944, No. 13496. [Class 40 (v)] [Also in Group XXXVI] An arrangement for selecting a band of frequencies of a given width from any part of a relatively wide band of frequencies contained in a complex wave is shown in the Figure. The complex wave is passed through a low-pass filter F1 which cuts off higher frequencies than those desired, and the resultant wave is mixed in a balanced modulator M1 with carrier waves from source O1 of at least twice the cut-off frequency of the filter F1. The output from the modulator M1 is applied to a circuit SC adapted to select the upper side-band and apply it to a demodulator D1 which is also fed from the oscillator O1 The upper side-band of the output from the demodulator D1 is cut off by filter F3 whilst the desired band at its correct frequency.is passed. Within the selective circuit SC the upper side-band of the output of the modulator M1 is passed by filter F2 and fed to modulator M2 which is supplied by oscillator 02 of fixed frequency. The lower side-band of this modulator M2 is of low enough frequency to enable easy selection of the required band by means of a filter SF. This component is fed to demodulator D2 supplied by oscillator O2 and the upper sideband is filtered by filter F4 and so passed to the demodulator D1. The components of the selective circuit can be non-variable, since the frequency of the upper side-band, of the output of the modulator M1 may be kept the same for all input frequencies by suitable adjustment of the frequency of the oscillator O1. Fig. 2 (not shown) illustrates an arrangement for the calibration of a beat frequency oscillator using a fixed and variable oscillator, in which the latter takes the place of the oscillator O1. The output from the beat frequency oscillator and from the selective arrangement are fed to the plates of an oscillograph which indicates the various calibration points when a steady 1 : 1 Lissajou figure is obtained. Specification 576,192, [Group XX], is referred to.
