Abstract
582,975. Torpedoes directing from aircraft. PURVES, R., and LAX, W. L. April 7,1938, No. 10676. [Class 9 (ii)] Relates to torpedo directors for use on aircraft and of the kind in which the vectortriangle, formed by a target-track bar 3, a torpedo-track bar 1 and a sight-bar 6, is set up. According to the invention, in order to avoid imparting angular velocity in azimuth to the torpedo just prior to release, a gyroscope 10 is provided having an electric contact 13 on its azimuth gimbal ring 12 which wipes over contact-bars 9 and a central gap contact 8 on the sight-bar in order to excite signal lamps 15, 16 that show when the aircraft has been turned to the correct torpedo release position with the sight-bar directed on the target. The red lights 16 are in circuit with a battery 20, switch 21 and the bars 9, and the white light 15 is in a branch circuit including the contacts 13, 8 and a solenoid 17 for actuating the firing contacts 19 and torpedo slip-release 23. The initial quick movement of the aircraft to direct the sight-bar on the target causes a first closure of contacts 13, 8 in passing across the gap between the contacts 9 and energizes the solenoid 17 to partly release the switch-arm 18. A slow movement of the aircraft then again closes the contacts 13, 8 to complete the movement of the switch arm 18 to release the torpedo. By setting the director to zero director-angle, the apparatus may be used for keeping the aircraft on a predetermined course for beacon landing.
