[Class 138 (ii)] [Also in Groups II and XXXII] The centrifugal drying, or spinner basket 71 of a domestic washing-machine discharges into an annular trough 26 communicating through an aperture 32 with the wash tub 1, and an overflow pipe 40 drains the trough and controls the liquid level in the tub. The overflow pipe is connected to the suction side of a pump 41, which is continuously driven by a motor 47, and discharges to a drain. The pump is also. connected with the bottom of the tube by way of a pipe 49 and a manually-operated dump valve. An oscillating agitator 58 in the tub is driven by means of a crank arm 63, connecting rod 64, eccentric 65 and belt gearing 66, 69 and 70 from the motor. The rim of the spinner basket overlaps the trough 26 at 72, and has discharge apertures 74 in an annular cover 73. The basket has its moment of inertia about its axis of rotation increased by a balance ring 75, and it is resiliently carried by a spring-steel ring 76 having a three-point connection with the basket and also with a three-armed spider 79 on a shaft 80. This shaft is journalled in a sleeve 81 secured to a hemisphere 84 which is mounted to swivel on a fixed hemisphere 85 against the action of a rubber ring 87 and under the control of friction linings 86 between the hemipheres. By this means static unbalance is neutralized by the tilting of shaft 80 against the rubber ring 87, and dynamic unbalance by tilting of the basket relative to shaft 80 as permitted by the spring ring 76. Gyroscopic precession is damped by the friction linings 86. The drive to shaft 80 is by way of resilient couplings 95 and 99, an intermediate shaft 91, and a friction pulley 92 which can be engaged either with the motor pulley 46 or a fixed brake block 109 by operating a lever. The whole mechanism is carried by a frame 11 bolted to a sheet metal skirt 3 in which the tub 1 and spinner basket casing 2 are seated.
