Abstract

A composition for the preparation of sheets, films, tubes, filaments and other articles of improved resistance to plastic flow at raised temperatures and improved flexibility at low temperatures, comprises in admixture one part of cellulose acetate having an acetyl content, calculated as acetic acid, of more than 56 per cent and not more than 61 per cent, and one to two and a half parts by weight of a plasticiser, but the composition is free from any addition of resin. The composition may be mixed with volatile solvents in the preparation of spinning solutions and casting dopes. The plasticiser may be dimethyl phthalate, di-methoxyethyl phthalate, di- or tri-acetin. Films made from the composition may be used for making laminated glass. They may be reinforced with fabric or wire mesh. The composition may be formed into coatings for fabrics or cables. It may be prepared in the form of a moulding powder. Articles may be obtained by a dipping process. In an example, 1 part of cellulose acetate of 57.3 per cent acetyl content is dissolved in 8 parts of acetone and 2 parts of di-methoxyethyl phthalate. The solution is spread upon a glass plate to form a film. Specifications 407,709, 541,724, 544,412, 544,550 and 564,265 are referred to.
