Abstract
581,457. Aerials. PIPPARD, A. B. June 17, 1944, No. 11596. [Class 40 (v)] In a directional aerial system comprising a reflector, mismatch of the associated radiating or receiving element due to energy reflected back to the element from the reflector, is minimised by so shaping the reflector that the reflection of energy back to the radiating or receiving element from one portion of the reflector is substantially counter-balanced by the reflection from the remainder of the reflector. For the case of a paraboloid 1, shown as being fed by a wave guide 4, the modification of shape is produced by a disc of conducting material 2, of diameter D = #4F#/3 where F is the focal length of the paraboloid and A is the wavelength, located at - the centre of the paraboloid. To obtain the correct phase of reflection from the disc its reflecting surface should be a distance l= # /8 from the apex 3 of 8 the reflector and. this condition is satisfied if the disc is of thickness t = #/24 and its rim is in contact with the paraboloid. The disc may also be located so that its reflecting surface is in front of or behind the defined position by one or more half wavelengths. The invention is stated to be applicable to spherical reflectors and parabolic '' cheese " reflectors, in which case the correction is produced by a flat plate extending across the thickness of the " cheese ".
