Abstract
581,221. Welding. WRIGHT, J. A., and METROPOLITAN - VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. July 6, 1944, No. 12900. [Class 83 (iv)] An intermittent seam spot-welding machine, comprising a pair of welding rollers 5, 6, of which 5 is driven intermittently, so as to feed the work during the off periods of the welding circuit, by a motor-driven adjustable-throw crank 13 or eccentric driving through a connecting rod 12 an intermittently oscillated arm 11 rotating the rollers step-by-step by a ratchet and pawl device 9, 10, is provided with a normally closed edge distance switch 24, which is opened, preferably by a cam 20 on the eccentric shaft 14a, at a predetermined point of each rotation of the eccentric, and which has in series therewith normally closed auxiliary contacts R2a of a main. relay R2 and the operating coil R3 of another relay, the energization of which is adapted to close auxiliary contacts R3, Fig. 4, in the circuit of the motor 19, the contacts R2a being opened by energization of the main coil R2 arranged in series with contacts 25 closed by a stop-andstart switch, the energization of the coil R2 also closing the main contacts R2, Fig. 4, to energize the motor in parallel with which contacts are the contacts R3. When using fluid pressure, the contacts 25 constitute a pressure switch. At the start of a seam, the rollers are brought together by a compressed-air cylinder associated with which is the pressure switch 25, the contacts of which close when a predetermined pressure is applied to the work, the closing of such switch energizing the coil R2 to close contacts R2, Fig. 4, to start up the motor and so the sequence of operations. During each welding operation the energizing circuit containing the switch 24 is open at R2a and so will not affect the operation of the motor. When the seam is completely welded, the pressure switch 25 opens to open contacts R2, Fig. 4, but contacts R2a close to energize coil R3 and'so close the contacts R3, Fig. 4, :so that the :motor continues to rotate until the cam 20 opens the edge distance switch 24. Thus, the eccentric is automatically set in proper position to give the predetermined distance 4 from the edge of the work of the first spot weld on a new piece of work. This distance may be changed by unlocking the cam and rotating it by hand and then relocking on the shaft. According to the Provisional Specification the apparatus maybe used for welding - aluminium or alloys thereof and the welding current may be initiated by contacts operated by a cam on the eccentric shaft.
