580,699. Indicating liquid-levels. BRAMSON, M. L. July 17, 1944, No. 1.3643. [Class 123 (i)] A liquid-level indicator comprises a spindle 10 mounted to rotate about a vertical axis, a float 22 movable along the spindle, and two sets of roller guides 28, 30, one on the spindle and the other external to the float, co-operating with rollers 26, 32 mounted on the float, the guides of at least one set being helical. Rise or fall of the float causes the spindle to rotate. In the form shown the spindle is mounted in a vertical tube 16 provided on its inner wall with four straight vertical channels 28 which form guides for four pairs of rollers 26 mounted on the float. The main part of the spindle, between its cylindrical ends, comprises a thin metal strip sandwiched between two metal bars 40 which are twisted to form a single-turn helix. The edges of the thin metal strip project beyond the edges of the bars to form the helical guides 30, on opposite sides of which roll pairs of rollers 32. The lower end of the spindle is centre-drilled to engage a steel ball 44 supported by an adjusting screw 46 with a locking nut 48. The spindle may carry a pointer, or be geared or connected by a flexible shaft, electrical means, or otherwise, to a remote pointer. According to the Provisional Specification there may be only two pairs of rollers to co-operate with the vertical channels.
