Abstract

580,097. Injection-moulding machines. PLASTICAST DEVELOPMENTS, Ltd., and STOCK, H. A. Feb. 15, 1944, No. 2750. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] A plurality of injection cylinders are mounted for rotation in turret fashion about a fixed axis, each cylinder being adapted by such rotation to be brought individually into mould filling position with its discharge nozzle in register with the mould filling aperture, the mould being so moved by hydraulic means that its filling aperture engages the nozzle registering therewith. The mould may have a plurality of filling apertures engageable by a plurality of nozzles. The cylinders may be horizontally disposed, rotating about a horizontal axis (Fig. 10, not shown), or may be vertically disposed, as shown. Three injection cylinders 59 are mounted on a rotatable turret 13 supported by a carriage 23 slidable on the bed A of the machine. Each cylinder has a horizontally-extending nozzle 11, and is in two parts 24, 24a, which are relatively rotatable so that a plurality of nozzles may be aligned with a plurality of mould filling openings. The turret 13 is rotated uni-directionally by a hydraulic cylinder 19 via rack bar 37 and pinion 38 which are coupled to the turret spindle 60 by a pawl and ratchet drive. The turret is locked in postition by a pin 21 operated by a hydraulic cylinder 22. The hopper 25, hydraulically-operated injection plungers 29 and material-delivery device M are all mounted on the carriage 23. The mould halves 1, 2 are slidable mounted on four horizontal bars 17. Operation:-The movable half 1 is pushed to the right by hydraulic cylinder 3, to engage mould half 2. Both halves then move on together, compressing springs (not shown) disposed around bars 17, and seating the aligned nozzles 11 in the mould half 2. Then the whole carriage 23 is pushed to the right against springs 15. The mould halves are locked in closed position by vertically-movable wedges 9a which are inserted by hydraulic cylinders 7a between fixed abutments and the rear of the mould-carrying platen 4. The aligned plunger 29 then descends to force heated material from the cylinder into the mould, and as it does so a bar 30 depresses a slide 26 and transfers a measured quantity of material from hopper tube 56 to cylinder delivery shoot 35, where it rests until plunger 29 rises. The mould halves then retract to the left and separate, the moulded article being ejected from mould half 1 by pins (not shown). The turret plate 13 is then indexed to bring another cylinder into mould-charging position.
