Abstract

Di-isocyanates for use as modifiers for cyclised rubber are prepared by passing hydrogen chloride through a solution of the corresponding diamine in an organic solvent, passing phosgene into the suspension of amine hydrochloride formed and then refluxing the product. Specified di-isocyanates are methylene di-(p-phenylene iso-cyanate), ethylene di-(oxytrimethylene isocyanate), and the di-isocyanates of hexamethylene, p- and m-phenylene, diphenylene, toluylene, dimethyl phenylene, naphthalene, dioxane, and of the glycol and dipropyl ethers.ALSO:Cyclised rubbers are modified for use as adhesives, paints, and moulding and coating compositions by the addition of an organic diisocyanate such as methylene di-(p-phenylene isocyanate), ethylene di-(oxytrimethylene isocyanate), the di-isocyanates of hexamethylene, p- and m-phenylene, diphenylene, toluylene, dimethyl phenylene, naphthalene, dioxane, glycol ethers or dipropyl ethers. The diisocyanates may be prepared by passing hydrogen chloride through a solution of the corresponding diamine in an organic solvent, passing phosgene into the suspension of amine hydrochloride formed and then refluxing the product. Suitable cyclised rubbers are those prepared by treating rubber with tin tetrachloride, boron fluoride, halides of amphoteric metals such as ferric chloride, chlorstannic, sulphonic, chlorsulphonic and hydrofluoric acids, or with hydrogen halides while the rubber is dissolved in a phenol; "Thermoprene" and the material known under the Registered Trade Mark "Pliolite" may also be used. Modifying agents such as plasticisers, diluents, fillers, reinforcing agents, age resistors, resins and dyes may also be added. As an adhesive, the composition which preferably contains 1-5 per cent of the di-isocyanate may be used to unite either to themselves or to each other, surfaces of rubber and rubber derivatives and substitutes, paper, cork, textiles, regenerated cellulose and cellulose derivatives, Nylon, glass, metals such as steel, brass, copper, aluminium and tin, and polymeric materials especially vinyl polymers and copolymers. In compositions for moulding up to 40 per cent of the diisocyanate may be added.
