Abstract

577,981. Safety devices for looms. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. March 24, 1943, No. 4771. Convention date, April 1,. 1942. [Class 142 (i)] [Also in Group XXIV] Consists in a safety device for preventing damage to mechanism in the event of the movement of a member thereof becoming obstructed or prevented. A shaft 1, Fig. 1, drives a member 2 through a lever 6 the pivot 7 of which is mounted on a rod 8 slidable in bearings 9, 10 fixed to the machine frame. A collar 11 on the rod is urged against the bearing 10 by a spring 12. While the machine is operating free from trouble, the pivot 7 remains stationary, but should the member 2 be prevented from moving the pivot 7 will yield and the lever 6 be brought to the position 6a the consequent movement of the rod 8 being utilized, through a lever 13 and shaft 14, to stop the mechanism. In a modification, Fig. 2, a cam 17 actuates a member 15 through a lever 20 the pivot 21 of which is carried on a rod 24 slidable in fixed bearings 22, 23. Springs 27, 27a bearing against plates 26, 26a and collars 28, 28a on the shaft maintain the latter in mid-position. Obstruction of member 15 causes the pivot 21 to yield and move rod 24 this movement, through a recess 30, ball 31, rod 33 and lever 34, actuating a control shaft 35. In further modifications, the yielding pivot is (1) the axle of a spur gear and (2) the axle of a helical gear. The invention is particularly applicable to a loom employing ordinary shuttles. Thus, in Fig. 5 a shuttle 40 is brought to rest by brakes in the position shown by full lines, in which position the weft thread 41 may be freed from the shuttle by a rod 42 entering an opening 47 and forcing apart the cheeks 48 of the gripper. The rod 42 is actuated by an eccentric 46 on a driving shaft 45 through a lever 43 with pivot 49 carried on a rod 52 slidable in bearings 50, 51 under the pressure of springs 55 and plates 56. If the shuttle has not reached its proper position, the rod 42 is obstructed and the pivot 49 and rod 52 caused to move so as to actuate a lever 57 and control shaft 58 described with reference to Fig. 2. The rod 42 is also obstructed by a hook 62 and end 61 of a lever 59, if the shuttle does not reach the braking position. If it does, the lever 59 is depressed. A rod 70 is also obstructed if the shuttle has not been picked. A further rod 71 normally rides over a member 74 which is retained in position by a feeler needle 75 urged against the weft thread 41 by a spring 77 and arm 76. If the thread breaks, the member 74 is so rotated as to obstruct the rod 71. Obstruction of rod 70 or 71 causes movement of rods 67 to actuate the stop rod 58.
