Abstract
577,854. Radio-echo apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. (International Standard Electric Corporation). Dec. 26, 1941, No. 16697. [Class 40 (v)] [Also in Group XXXVI] An arrangement for determining the distance of an obstacle by the transmission of pulsating radiation and receiving after reflection uses at the receiver the contemporaneous transmitted radiation and received radiation after reflection to produce pulses whose durations are equal to the time that elapses between the end or beginning of a transmitted pulsation and the end or beginning of the pulsation of the corresponding received reflected radiation, means being provided for giving an indication of the duration of these pulses. In Fig. 1 the full line indicates a frequency wave continuously variable between values f, F. This wave is transmitted and received after reflection at the object with a line lag t, the received wave being shown in dotted lines. The transmitted and received waves are heterodyned giving the resultant shown in the lower part of Fig. 1 in which pulses are formed having a duration equal to the elapsed time of travel of the waves. These are applied to a limiting detector system by which they are transformed into pulsating current of constant amplitude having a mean value proportional to the elapsed time of travel of the waves. The pulsating current is measured on a milliammeter graduated in distances. In a modification, Fig. 3, pulses of duration d greater than the maximum elapsed time for echoes from the most distant objects are transmitted. Reflected pulses shown in dotted lines arrive with a time lag t. The receiver is blocked during each transmitted pulse so that the duration of the received pulses is equal to the elapsed time t of travel of the waves to and from the obstacle as shown in the lower part of Fig. 3. These pulses are applied to a limiting device and their average value read on a milliammeter. Alternatively a cathode-ray oscillograph may be employed.
