Abstract

576,095. Compound transparent sheets. LOCKHEED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION, and STEVENS, A. H. Aug. 22, 1942, No. 11845. Addition to 556,035. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, July 4, 1943.] [Class 140] [Also in Group X] In compound glass as described in the parent Specification having an interlayer of polyvinyl butyral or similar plastic material projecting beyond the margins of the layers of glass, the projecting edge (a) is made thicker than that portion of the inter layer between the glass sheets and/or (b) extends in overlapping relationship around the margin of one or more of the glass layers. The glass sheets may be replaced by other hard transparent material, e.g., polymerized acrylic acid esters, The thickened edge 16, Fig. II, of the plastic interlayer uniting glass sheets 43 and 47 extends around the edge of the larger sheet 47 as at 48, and facilitates clamping the compound sheet between the outer skin 41 of an aeroplane fuselage and an inner frame 42. The gap between the skin 41 and the glass surface 43 may be filled with a plastic composition, or a rib moulded integrally with the plastic interlayer. Alternatively a plastic layer 114, Fig. VII, uniting sheets of glass 113 is built up around the edges of the glass sheets 113 to form a U-shaped channel enclosing and bonded to the edges of the sheets, whereby the laminated sheet may be resiliently clamped between an outer frame member 119 to which the skin' of the fuselage is secured and an inner frame member 121. The outer part of the channel may be extended to cover the whole outer surface of the glass 113 with plastic material 117 to which an outer glass pane 118 is secured, flush with the skin of the fuselage. A laminated transparent sheet 215, Fig. XIV; may be assembled face to face with a second laminated sheet 219 and/or with one or more sheets of hard transparent material 216 such as a polymerized acrylic ester to form windows with single or double dead air spaces 220, 221 enclosed between the transparent panes, the panes being spaced apart by resilient plastic extensions 217 of the interlayers 218 of the laminated sheet or sheets, and also in some cases by non-resilient plastic strips or metal frame members, The resilent plastic extensions of the interlayers may be bonded by a polyvinyl resin adhesive, and may contain one or more reinforcing strips 224 of inextensible material such as aluminium or an alloy which may extend between or outside the glass laminations of either laminated glass sheet. The multiple glazed pane may be secured by bolts 223 to a channel 222 bolted to the fuselage.
