[Classes 9 (i), 9 (ii) and 92 (ii)] The propellant charge for projectiles fired from open-end recoilless guns has such quick - burning characteristics as to be wholly consumed before the projectile leaves the muzzle of a short discharge tube or gun, and is contained in a container of cup or part-spherical shape. The propellant may be of cordite type augmented by black powder dust, aluminium powder and baryta, the ingredients being arranged in layers. A hemispherical charge A applied directly to the base of a projectile B is shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 2 shows a projectile having a charge cavity A<2> of spherical formation with a flared outlet A<3>, and also inclined passages'D, whereby rdtation is set up by the issuing gases. In a modified form, the cavity A<2> may be filled with ordinary propellant and a quick-burning charge, such as that of Fig. 5, is attached to the projectile base, the internal propellant being ignited after the projectile has left the discharge tube A<1> and acting as a rocket charge in flight. 'A glass bottle or a tin F, Fig. 4, may be fired from the gun by interposing between the hemispherical charge A and the bottle or the like a disc E of wood, pasteboard or metal, and a rubber wad H or a layer of adhesive, the whole being enclosed in a paper or like combustible sack. The disc E may have oblique holes G filled with the propellant powder to impart spin to the projectile through the friction of the wad H or the adhesive. A firing mechanism (not claimed), actuated by a trigger L, is shown in Fig. 5, the striker J being pivoted in a recess O in the wall of the tube, and re-cocked on discharge by the blast of the propellant gases. A bundle of the discharge tubes, for use on aircraft, may be assembled in a frame which is lowered on a parallel linkage from a housed position in the fuselage or wing to a discharge position therebelow.
