Abstract
575,118. Tea and coffee extracts. REAVELL, J. A. June 28, 1944, No. 12285. [Class 129] A concentrated liquid or solid extract of tea or coffee is obtained by preparing an infusion of tea or coffee in a closed extractor so that the aroma or flavouring ingredients a r e retained, evaporating or concentrating the infusion so that the aromatic or flavouring constituents are distilled off, and returning those distilled constituents to the extract at a later stage. Dry spraying may be used to form a soluble powder. A soluble carbohydrate such as glucose or lactose may be added to the liquid or solid at any stage of the process, to improve keeping qualities and render a powder less hygroscopic. The amount added to coffee is preferably one-tenth of the weight of coffee powder. A batch of tea may be infused by using a hot weak extract of tea, instead of water, followed by further extraction with still weaker extract and finally water. Other known methods of percolation and re-circulation may be used. In the figure liquor from a feed tank a is heated in b, and volatile aromatic constituents are distilled off in the still c, d and condenser e and led to a receiver f. Liquor from d is passed through a pipe g to the lower end of an evaporator or concentrator h which may be of the continuous or climbing film type having two or three evaporating stages. Liquor and vapours derived from the first stage are led into a separator m from which the liquor is led by a conduit n back into the evaporator and then into a second separator o. The process is repeated and the liquor passes through h into a third separator p from which the concentrated liquor enters a receiver q. Preferably a common vacuum pipe v leading to a suitable form of condenser and vacuum system is connected to all of the separators. The use of the " Kestner" climbing film principle is referred to in the Specification. A number of examples of coffee or tea extraction are described in the Specification.
