Abstract

574,818. Treating iron-bearing titanium ores. BRITISH TITAN PRODUCTS CO., Ltd. Aug. 3, 1943, No. 12506. Convention date, Aug. 1, 1942. Drawings to Specification. [Class 1 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] Iron-bearing titanium ores such as ilmenite are treated with hydrochloric acid to bring the bulk of the iron into solution and leave a titanium dioxide concentrate, the latter is chlorinated to form and volatilise titanium tetrachloride, which is brought into solution and hydrolized to obtain hydrated titanium oxide which is calcined and hydrochloric acid for treating fresh ore; whilst the iron chloride solution is reduced and electrolysed to obtain metallic iron and chlorine which is used for chlorinating fresh titanium dioxide concentrate. In the first step elevated temperatures and relatively concentrated hydrochloric acid are used. In the chlorination step, the concentrate is preferably briquetted with carbonaceous material and a binder and ferric chloride passing off with the titanium tetrachloride is separated therefrom and added to the iron chloride solution to be electrolysed. The latter is usually acid and is neutralized before or during the reduction of ferric chloride present to ferrous chloride. Spent electrolyte from the electrolysis step may be used to form the titanium tetrachloride solution, and hydrolysis of the latter be effected in the presence of nuclei. Electrolysis may take place in a diaphragm cell having a carbon anode and iron cathode, using the iron chloride solution as catholyte and calcium chloride solution as anolyte, and current densities of 2-10 amps. per sq. decimetre. Specification 421,308 is referred to.
