Abstract

Tetrafluorethylene is polymerized at elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of water and oxygen, ozone or an organic peroxide. Preferred temperatures are between 55 DEG and 240 DEG C. and pressures between 1000 and 4000 pounds per square inch. The pressure may be increased by the presence of an inert gas, e.g. carbon dioxide, hydrogen or nitrogen. The water is preferably made alkaline by addition of caustic soda or potash, lime, barium hydroxide, sodium, potassium, ammonium or sodium carbonates or ammonium hydroxide. Alkali metal, alkaline earth metal and ammonium salts of weak acids and aliphatic amines and their salts with weak acids may also be used. Suitable peroxides are diacetyl, dipropionyl, dibutyryl, dibenzoyl, benzoylacetyl, diethyl, dipropyl, cyclohexanone, tetrahydronaphthalene and diethyl ether peroxides. The process may be carried out continuously and the catalyst may be injected into the reaction zone at one or several points. Unreacted tetrafluorethylene may be recycled. The apparatus is made of or lined with mild or stainless steel, silver, nickel, tantalum, glass or porcelain. The products may be used for making flexible tubing, gaskets, valve packings, pump diaphragms, bottle cap liners, linings for containers and for electric insulation. Sodium difluoroacetate may be recovered from the aqueous solution resulting from the polymerization by precipitating sodium fluoride as calcium fluoride, evaporating the filtrate to dryness, extracting with absolute alcohol and crystallizing.
