Abstract

Toluene is nitrated with a nitric ester of a normal primary saturated aliphatic alcohol, ethyl to amyl, or a monochlor derivative thereof, and a dehydrating mineral acid at a temperature above 40 DEG C. The mineral acid is used in excess of that required to convert the ester to nitric acid. In the examples: (1) sulphuric acid is reacted with ethyl nitrate and toluene. The product is diluted with water, the acid layer separated and the organic phase washed with water and sodium carbonate solution and distilled to separate the mononitro toluenes. The isomers are isolated by fractionation. (2) Toluene, chloroethyl nitrate and sulphuric acid are treated similarly. (3) Toluene, butylnitrate and sulphuric acid are also treated similarly.
