Abstract

573,152. Determining physical qualities of materials. ARMOUR, A. M., WALLEY, J. W., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. May 21, 1943, No. 8146. [Class 37] An arrangement for detecting faults in specimens of electrically conducting non-ferrous materials comprises means for subjecting the specimen to the action of a constant magnetic field, means for producing relative rotation between the specimen and magnetic field about an axis transverse to the direction in which the magnetic field acts, and search coil means arranged for detecting any variation of the induced cross-field whereby to provide an indication of the presence.or absence of a fault in the specimen. Fig. 2 shows an arrangement for detecting flows in a cylindrical specimen r of a non-magnetic alloy. The specimen is supported on a rotatable platform b having means hj, hk for centering the specimen accurately between the poles of constantly energized electromagnets en, es carried on a magnetic yoke y. The platform l is rotated at a constant speed of about thirty revolutions per minute by a motor d. The induced cross field is picked up by two pairs of search coils C<1> C<2> or C<3> C<4> arranged in series and connected to a galvanometer a. The coils of each pair are oppositely arranged so as to eliminate the effects of mechanical inaccuracies. The existence of a flow causes a change in the cross field at twice the frequency of revolution. This is shown by deflections on the meter a, which is selected to have a natural frequency of vibration equal to that of the fluctuations. The sensitivity is increased by providing the search coils with high permeability cores. Different regions of the specimens are tested by moving the magnet assembly axially along guides m by means of motors q and chain and counterweight mechanism.
