Abstract
572,731. Electric control systems. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., SNOW, P. E. ACKLAND-, FARREN, I. L., and RIVLIN, R. S. Oct. 1, 1941, No. 12707. [Class 40 (i)] [Also in Group XIX] An electrical apparatus for obtaining the quotient of two given quantities a, b comprises means for applying an input to terminals (A) proportional to a, means for varying the transmission ratio between the terminals (A) and other terminals (C) in such manner that the output at terminals (C) is constant whatever the value of a, means for applying to terminals (B) an input proportional to b, and means for causing the transmission ratio between terminals (B) and other terminals (D) to vary concurrently with and proportional to the first transmission ratio thereby obtaining an output at terminals (D) proportional to the ratio b/a, the transfer paths between the terminals A and C and B and D, comprising thermionic valve amplifiers. In the embodiment shown 1 and 2 are similar valve amplifiers, 3 and 4 are another pair of similar valve amplifiers. Amplifiers 1 and 3, and 2 and 4, are connected by leads 5 and 6. The output of amplifier 1 feeds a rectifier 7, the smoothed output of which is applied as a bias to a valve in each of the four amplifiers. The biases are adjusted in such manner that whatever the value a assumes, within some determinate range, the output of amplifier 3 has a constant value k. Means to this end have been used in automatic volume control apparatus. As the gain in the circuit of the amplifiers 2 and 4 is the same as that in the circuit of amplifiers 1 and 3 the output at amplifier 4 is b equal to k-, a and b being alternating voltages a applied to the amplifiers 1 and 2. Instead of two pairs of amplifiers one pair, viz. 1 and 3, may be employed, voltages a and b being applied to the input terminals at different frequencies fa and fb. The rectifier 7 is then fed at the frequency fa by means of a filter and the output of amplifier 3 is divided into two parts by filters. The part with the frequency fa is observed and the biases adjusted so that this part is independent of the value a. In another modification (not shown) two similar potentiometers with sliders ganged mechanically may be employed. The output of the first potentiometer is kept constant as indicated by an appropriate instrument either controlled manually or by known automatic means ; the output of the second potentiometer will give the desired ratio of the two inputs.
