Abstract

A ferment capable of producing solvents, such as acetone and butyl alcohol, and acids such as butyric, propionic, acetic and lactic acids from starch- and sugar - containing materials is named Clostridium butylo-butyricum and is isolated from the bark of Hibiscus Sabdariffa. The bacterium, strengthened by repeated cultivation, is plated-out under an robic conditions to form single colonies, of 2 to 4 mm. diameter which are flat or with a depressed centre, and are red at the centre and surrounded by an orange and then a white zone. If accumulation of acid in the culture is not checked, as by calcium carbonate, the bacterium degenerates to a white variety which does not attack starch directly. The bacterium attacks cellulose and hemi-cellulose in presence of easily fermentable carbohydrates such as starch or glucose and may be used for fermenting maize, rice bran, wheat bran, molasses, wheat, hydrolysed wood or hydrolysed straw.ALSO:A ferment capable of producing solvents such as acetone and butyl alcohol and also of producing acids such as butyric, propionic, acetic and lactic acids from starch- and sugar-containing materials is named Clostridium butylo-butyricum and is isolated from the bark of Hibiscus Sabdariffa. The bacterium, strengthened by repeated cultivation, is plated-out under anaerobic conditions to form single colonies of 2 to 4 mm. diameter which are flat or with a depressed centre and are red at the centre and surrounded by an orange and then a white zone. If accumulation of acid in the culture is not checked, as by calcium carbonate, the bacterium degenerates to a white variety which does not attack starch directly. The bacterium attacks cellulose and hemicellulose in presence of easily fermentable carbohydrates such as starch or glucose and may be used for fermenting maize, rice bran, wheat bran, molasses, wheat, hydrolysed wood or hydrolysed straw. The cultures may be activated by heating while in spore condition for two minutes at 100 DEG C.
