Abstract

571,437. Light filters. BARR & STROUD, Ltd., FRENCH, J. W., and DAVY, J. July 15, 1942, No. 9868. [Class 97 (i)] [Also in Groups II and X] Metallic coated light filters are produced by coating with stainless steel by the vaporization of the metal in a high vacuum. The steel in the form of a wire is wound in a tight spiral around a heater wire having a higher melting point than the steel such as tungsten and the weight of the steel is such that when it is completely volatilized the density of the coating will be of a predetermined amount. In one form of apparatus for carrying out the coating the steel wire 14 is wound round a tungsten wire 7 disposed centrally with regard to the windows 6 to be coated which are mounted in two rows and supported by.clips 8 on pillars 9 in a closed glass chamber 1. The lower end of the wire 7 is kept straight by a weight 11 and is steadied by a guide 12 carried on a post 13, the wire 7 being connected to the guide 12 by a spring 29. The cover 3 and base-plate 2 are connected by sealing material 4 to the chamber 1 from which the air is exhausted through a post 5. The high voltage current enters through an insulator 28 to discharge wire 15 partly enclosed in glass tube 16, discharge taking place through the plate 2 and connection 17, the upper end of the heater 7 also passing through an insulator 10 and being connected to a current lead. Baffles &c. 30 may be provided between the groups of windows 6 to prevent deposition at unduly oblique angle which might result in defective grading of the coating. The wire 7 may have two or more separate coils of steel wire, each disposed opposite a group of surfaces to be coated, the spirals being prevented from slipping endwise by a small spiral or bead of material of high melting point.
