Abstract

Nuclear dichlorostyrenes and conjugated dienes are copolymerized in emulsion to yield rubber-like products. The dichlorostyrenes are described in Specification 564,828. 2,5-Dichlorostyrene is particularly useful. The diene may be butadiene, phenyl, methyl or dimethyl butadienes or 2-chlorobutadiene. A drying oil may replace part of the diene. A third component, e.g. n- or m-iso-butylene, amylenes, vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride may be present. There may be present in the emulsion a catalyst, e.g. hydrogen peroxide, urea peroxide and sodium perborate; an emulsifying agent, e.g. sodium salts of sulphonated aliphatic hydrocarbons, alkyl sulphates, alkali metal alkyl benzene, alkyl naphthalene sodium sulphonates, sodium or ammonium oleate or laurate, alkali metal sulphonated esters and oils, e.g. sulphoethyl oleate; emulsion stabilizers, e.g. gelatine, glue and casein; surface tension regulators, e.g. capryl or n-octyl alcohol, 2 - ethylhexanol; modifying agents, e.g. ethylene, chloroform and carbon tetrachloride. The monomers may be freed from aldehydes, which act as polymerization inhibitors, by treatment with sodium bisulphite, metabisulphite or hydrosulphite. The copolymer may be compounded with vulcanization accelerators and activators, anti-oxidants, sulphur and fillers, e.g. carbon black and zinc oxide, and vulcanized. The products are useful for making films and for coating wires.
