Abstract
569,950. Treatment of electroplated continuous strip. CARNEGIE-ILLINOIS STEEL CORPORATION. Aug. 31, 1943, No. 14211. Convention date, March 23. [Class 41] In a process for bright-melting electrolytically - coated, continuous strip by passing it through a melting unit and quenching it in water or other medium in a tank, excess coating material and scale discharged from the strip-surface in the melting is diverted from the space between the strip and a guide roller by circulating the water.' The strip S is .resistance-heated by connecting the rolls 2, 3 to a current-source, so as to establish a melting-zone M in the discharge leg 8 of muffle 6. Water under pressure from nozzles 10 beneath the water-level in leg 8 circulates in the tank to a lower discharge outlet (not shown). Particles dislodged from the strip by the melting are deflected clear of the roller and fall to the bottom of the tank where they may be recovered, the action being assisted by an insulating trough 14 which is downwardly-inclined in the direction of the nozzles. A set of nozzles 16 and trough 17 may also be provided above the pressure-roll 15. Other fluid than the quenching medium may be introduced through the nozzles to promote circulation of the medium.
