569,482. Batteries. TORDAI, L. June 22, 1943, Nos. 10050 and 14190. [Class 53] In a dry battery built up of a number of cellforming elements loosely assembled in a container and comprising zinc plates, depolarizer cups and electrolyte tablets arranged in sequence, the container is sealed in an air-tight manner, thus preventing creeping of the electrolyte and consequent deterioration of the battery. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, each unit cell comprises a zinc plate f, an electrolyte tablet d, a paper disc c, and a cup a of semi - conducting material containing the depolarizer, the several elements being maintained in contact by springs m engaging terminal contacts j. The cells fit loosely in the container so that gases developed during use circulate freely and pass to spaces left at one or both ends of the container. The cups a are made of a plastic composition containing powdered carbon to render them semi-conductive. In modifications: (1) the cups a are formed in flanged zinc plates during manufacture, Fig. 3 (not shown) ; and (2) the zinc plates have a carbonaceous varnish coating and the cups a have a central aperture through which the mix protrudes to engage the carbonaceous coating, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown). The first Provisional Specification describes an alternative means for connecting the zinc electrode to the external terminal and also means for sealing individual cells by sealing material contained in an annular space between the carbonaceous electrode and the ring containing the depolarizer.
