569,008. Alumina; aluminium and potassium sulphates; sulphur dioxide INSTITUTO NACIONAL DE INDUSTRIA. Nov. 27, 1942, No. 16869. Convention date, Nov. 27, 1941. [Classes 1 (ii) and 1 (iii)] A process for the manufacture of alumina, potassium sulphate, and sulphuric acid from alunite ores comprises the following steps : (1) triturating and grinding the ore ; (2) calcining in a muffle furnace with a non-siliceous lining at 750-1250‹ C. to decompose the aluminium sulphate and obtain sulphur dioxide and trioxide ; (3) converting these gases into sulphuric acid (4) extracting potassium sulphate from the calcination residue by washing with hot water, and crystallizing ; (5) treating the insoluble residue of alumina and impurities such as silica and iron with the acid obtained in (3) to give aluminium sulphate which is separated by filtration, evaporated and calcined to yield non-siliceous alumina, and sulphurous gases which are returned to the process. The alumina is purified by the Bayer process and used for the electrolytic production of aluminium.
