Abstract

568,998. Rivet &c. feeding devices for riveting and screw inserting. HEATH, C. W. June 17, 1944, No. 11567. [Classes 83 (iii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Group VII] A device for supplying rivets, screws, nails, &c. from a container is formed as an attachment to an inserting tool and is operated by compressed air. As applied to a pneumatic riveter, the snap 2 is loosely retained in the tool by a split holder 15 held together by two screws 29 and serving to support the device by a tube 6 in conjunction with springs 27, 28. The snap or other tool is thus free to vibrate longitudinally or rotate according to whether the device is fitted to a hammer or a rotary tool. The container 14 for the loose assemblage of rivets can be swung aside about the bush 8 and then moved laterally for removal for refilling. Spring sleeves 10 lock the container in place. The normal operating trigger t for the hammer is preferably fixed down the air supply to the hammer being controlled by a valve c in the device. A valve a supplies air to the container at d and a valve b through the tube 6 and passage e to direct a jet at the opening in jaws 3 arranged to hold a single rivet. The valves are sequentially operated on axial movement of the container by cam pins 16a, 16b, 16c attached to the holder 15. The jaws 3 are normally spring-closed at 5, but movement of the device rearwardly of the tool causes the snap to open them as shown in Fig. 9, in which position they are held clear of the tool, whether reciprocating or rotary. With the device in the position shown in Fig. 1, the valve a is open and air blows the rivets along the passage 1 towards the jaws 3. As the device is moved back towards the hammer, the valve b opens and causes a jet of air to agitate the rivets near the holder 3 until one enters the opening in it and is held by its head. Further movement of the device closes the valve a and the jet from b deflected owing to the closure of the hole in the holder 3 by the rivet drives the other rivets back into the container. Further movement closes the valve b and the device is in the neutral position in which the protruding shank of the rivet can be inserted into the work. Further rearward movement of the device then causes the parts of the holder 3 to separate and opens the valve c to set the rivets.
