Abstract

568,928. Tractor-trailer couplings. MACNEILL,D. July 5,1943, Nos. 10858/43 and 11590/44. [Class 103 (v)] A load-limiting safety hitch device for a hitched tractor and agricultural implement is in the form of a strut adapted to shorten with mechanical snap-action when overloaded and to cause immobilisation of the tractor ; the strut is shown in Fig. 1 as the upper link 13 of a three-link coupling, the shortening of the link being produced by telescoping against spring resistance of tubes 16, 17 with consequent operation of a Bowden cable 39 to release the clutch of the tractor. The inner tube 17, Fig. 3, is normally retained in position by balls 19, which are placed in lateral orifices 20 of the tube 17 and are forced outwardly into engagement with a bevelled-edged seating 21 in the outer tube 16 by a conical wedge-member 22 pressed by a spring 23 ; overload pressure pushing the balls against the bevelled edge of seating 21 forces them inwardly to push back the spring- pressed conical member against the spring 23 and so allow forward movement of the tube 17 carrying one attachment 36 for the cable, the other attachment 38 being on the exterior of outer tube 16.
