Abstract

568,589. Materials. MANSELL, H. C., ALEXANDER, W. O., BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Oct. 8. 1943, No. 16490. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] [Also in Groups II and XXVI] Surfaces of cylinder heads, pistons, valves, &c. which are exposed to the burnt gases are constituted by a layer of .010-.015" thick of iron, steel, nickel or nickel alloy, the layer being bonded by heat or heat and pressure to a base of a copper alloy which is suitable for precipitation hardening heat treatment and which retains its strength at operating engine temperatures. Suitable copper alloys contain .26-2 per cent chromium, preferably .45-.75 per cent with or without .001-.05 per cent silver, .5-.7 per cent chromium and .03 per cent silver being most suitable, or the alloy may contain .3-5 per cent zirconium, preferably 1-3 per cent. Blanks for use in making the parts or components are formed by sandwiching a layer of nickel &c. between a thicker layer of copper alloy and a sheet of de-oxidized copper, inserting the whole in a copper or steel envelope and hot rolling the packet at about 900‹ C. to reduce its thickness to one-third. The packet is then emptied, the layer of deoxidized copper removed and the composite nickel-copper sheet cold rolled to the desired thickness ready for blanks to be cut from it. Alternatively, the bonding may be effected by brazing. In forming, for example, a junkhead for a sleeve valve engine, a circular blankis heated to 1000‹ C., softened by quenching in water and then pressed into a shallow cup 7 having indents which can be machined to receive sparking-plug adapters 5 without exposing the copper base to the burnt gases. Before machining, the cups are heated to 1000‹ C., quenched and finally heated at 450‹ C. for four hours. The cup is brazed on to a steel carrying sleeve 9 and cooling fins 8 similarly secured to the cup or silver-soldered thereto. In expectation of this latter operation, the previous heating at 450‹ C. may be omitted.
