Abstract

566,991. Forging-machines ; chucks. NEWALL, A. P. July 17, 1943, Nos. 11651 and 12489. [Classes 83 (ii), 83 (iii) and 83 (iv)] A bar swaging-machine has a carriage for holding the bar and feeding it through the dies, movement of the carriage controlling the dies to render them alternately operative and inoperative and at the same time the speed of traverse is regulated to produce a rapid movement whilst the dies are idle. A shaft 13 rotatable in roller bearings 14 in the frame 11 has a head 12 in which opposed dies 16 slide under the action of slide blocks 19<1> fitted with rollers 201 that contact with rollers 17 mounted in a cage 18. Wedges 21<1>, interposed between the slide blocks and the dies, are connected to a hollow spindle 22 connected for axial traverse, to a bell-crank 26 actuated by a hydraulic piston 24. Movement of the wedges renders the dies operative or idle. Standards 35 support ways comprising four channel bars 33, 34 between which a carriage 32 runs on wheels 46, 47. A hollow spindle 48 mounted in ball bearings 69 is tapered to swivel a bevel closing collet 50 advanced into the chuck, for clamping the end of the bar stock A, by a screwed sleeve 51. The spindle is formed at 53 and the sleeve 51 at 52 to receive tommy bars to impart the necessary relative rotation. The stock held in the chuck is free to rotate with the dies when gripped by them, but is braked from too free a rotation by a shoe 54 lined with friction material 55 and pressed against the flange 48<1> by springs 56. A handled arm 74 rotatably connected to a half-nut 65 moves over a cam surface to control the engagement of the nut with a lead screw 64 driven by a motor 66 through reduction gearing 67. 'A projection from one side of the carriage houses a sliding striker 61 that coacts with tappets 62, 63 adjusted along rods 30, 31 according to the lengths to be swaged and left unworked. The bars are connected by levers 29, 291, 29<11> pivoted at their. mid-points. The parts are shown in the swaging position in Fig. 1 and this continues till the striker 61 contacts the tappet 62 moving the bar 30 to the right. The rocking of the lever 29 actuates a relay valve 28<1> controlling a reversing valve 37 through a throttle control valve 38 to admit oil from a motor-driven pump unit below the piston 24 and withdraw the wedges 21<1>. At the same time an arm 69 of the lever 29<11> operates a switch to increase the speed of the motor 66 and consequently the rate of traverse of the carriage 32. In disengaging from the tappet 62 the striker moves into position to engage the next tappet 63, contact with which restores the parts to the initial condition. After a complete traverse of the carriage, the chuck is released, and the half-nut is raised, permitting the carriage to be returned to the left ready for a fresh traverse. Making bolts and studs.-Stock thus swaged may be cut into blanks for the manufacture of bolts or studs, the threads being preferably formed by die rolling.
