Abstract

566,655. Gyroscopic apparatus. JACK & HEINTZ, Inc. Jan. 5, 1943, No. 200. Convention date, Jan. 5, 1942. [Class 97 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] A shock-absorbing device for a gimbal ring, suitable for use in the directional gyroscope of an automatic pilot, comprises a cage 33 or 45 containing a spring-actuated block 36 or 50 which presses upon a ball 32 or 43 interposed between the block and the trunnion 14 or 15 of the gimbal ring 10, and a screw 41 or screwthread 45<1> for adjusting the position of the cage and simultaneously varying the pressure of the block to render the bearing rigid under normal operation, but to permit it to yield and absorb the shock if an abnormal end thrust occurs. The gimbal ring 10, in the form of a housing for the rotor 1, is made of magnesium and the trunnions 14, 15 and parts 22, 26 of the bearing assembly are made of steel. In order to compensate for the effect of variations of temperature and to maintain constant bearing clearances at the trunnions, the adjusting screw 41 is made of aluminium.
