Abstract

566,278. Light-sensitive cells. ROTHSCHILD, S., and CATHODEON, Ltd. June 21, 1943, No. 13505. [Class 40 (iii)] [Also in Group III] The light-sensitive material for a cell for detecting or measuring infra-red radiation by variations of conductivity or electromotive force comprises any one or any mixture of the following compounds, namely sulphides of zinc and cadmium, and cadmium selenide, the selected compound or mixture of compounds having been heated in the presence of a halide salt and a trace of a metal compound in an inert atmosphere up to a temperature of about 1000‹ C. For detecting or measuring the infra-red radiation by variations of dielectric constant, the material selected is zinc-cadmium sulphide or cadmium sulphide. The material may be applied over spaced wire coils wound in double-spiral formation on a mica plate. The material may be mixed with a non-conducting binder such as polystyrene solution. The coated plate 1, Fig. 2, may be enclosed in an evacuated glass bulb 14, and may be heated by a coil 13 to reduce time lag. A suitable cadmium selenide is prepared by passing sulphur dioxide through a warm solution of sodium carbonate to saturation. Red selenium is mixed with this solution until no more dissolves. A solution of pure cadmium sulphate is slowly dripped into the selenium solution until an orange colouration appears. The mixture is boiled for about 20 minutes and then left standing for 2 hours. The precipitate of cadmium selenide then formed is filtered, washed and dried. This process differs from the process described in Specification 522,860, in that a high-pressure oven is not used. Specification 311,662, [Class 40 (iii)], also is referred to.
