565,919. Fractional distillation of hydrocarbons &c. WOODALL-DUCKHAM (1920), Ltd., and CHADDER, W. J. Aug. 6, 1940, No. 12631. [Class 32] In the separation of liquids of different boiling points from mixtures containing them by fractional distillation in a batch still having a fractionating column associated with a total condenser for the distillate and a reflux liquid return circuit, the removal of an intermediate fraction, e.g. a fraction made up of constituents . of one liquid and the liquid of next higher boiling point, which fraction is distilled off at intermediate temperatures between the boiling points of the first and second liquid and the amount of which fraction can be predetermined by preliminary experiment, is effected by ceasing to withdraw distillate when the temperature of the still head commences to rise and returning all reflux to the column until a condition of equilibrium is established, as indicated by a steady vapour temperature at the head of the column, removing the intermediate fraction separately, in stages if desired, with re-establishment of equilibrium conditions again until the still head temperature becomes constant, whereupon the distillation of the second fraction is effected. The process is described with reference to the distillation of mixtures of benzole, toluole and xylole to obtain pure nitration toluole &c., and examples are given of operating conditions.
