Abstract
565,597. Punching-machines. REMINGTON RAND, Inc. Jan. 27, 1943, No. 1423. Convention date, May 7, 1942. [Class 31 (ii)] A punching- machine, which is especially applicable for recording sales in department stores by making selective punch holes in a tape which can subsequently be used to transfer the data to statistical cards for use with tabulating machines, is constructed with a number of setting-slides 15, Figs. 3, 3A, which are moved by means of a stylus engaged in one of a number of numbered holes 16, the stylus being moved to engage the end of a slot 13 in a machine cover 11, thus bringing an indication corresponding to the selected number beneath a slot 14 in the cover. The movements of the slides 15 control punch control slides 22 by a pin-and-slot connection 20,21 to position them differentially over punches 36, Fig. 3A. The slides are carried in a frame which is depressed to effect the punching by means of a U-shaped link 32 operated from a rockshaft 35 which is oscillated by a cam 70 on the main driveshaft 61 and a lever 72. The punch frame carries also a punch 82 which operates to make feed-apertures which are engaged by pins 81 in a feed roll 82 which is advanced intermittently by pawl-andratchet mechanism on movement of the operating handle 60 in one direction. This handle is first given a movement of a quarter revolution in one direction and then a return movement under control of a full-stroke device of known kind comprising a toothed sector 73 and a pawl 75. The ratchet-mechanism is driven by bevel gearing 77, 78 from the shaft 61, and the tape 9, Fig. 1 (not shown), is unwound from a spool mounted on a pin 8 carried by key-hole slots 6 in uprights 5, and the perforated tape is finally wound on a spool 131 driven by a crossed belt from the roller 80. The tape is fed over guides 111, 114, the latter being carried by a spring-pressed lever so as to tension the tape. The slides 15 are held in set-position by spring-pressed detents 51 which engage teeth 53 on the undersides of the slides, and at the end of the punching operation the detents are released by a retract mechanism comprising a link 106 which actuates a retract bail bar 108 which when depressed releases all the detents. The link is actuated automatically by lever mechanism associated with the ratchet mechanism for operating the feed roller 80. Also the link 106 can be depressed by handoperation upon a bent extension 107. When the wind-up spool attains a certain size it acts upon a feeler which causes a spring-controlled lever to snap over and hold the retract mechanism permanently in operative position so that the slides 15 cannot be held in set-position. This notifies the operator that the rewind roll must be removed. Specification 23908/12, [Class 31 (ii)], is referred to.
