Abstract
In the manufacture of articles from powdered material, which may be wholly or in part of metal, a number of sections are separately formed and joined to form the article required by applying to the abutting surfaces a boundary material having a lower melting point than the final sintering temperature of the body. The parts may be formed by pressing unsintered powders or may be cut and ground from presintered bars. The boundary material may be applied in the form of powder, foil, or by plating or sputtering &c. Bodies of large dimensions or complicated shape may be made from carbides of tungsten, molybdenum, titanium or tantalum bonded with cobalt, nickel or iron &c., and in these cases the boundary material is the same as the bond so that the final sintering yields a substantially homogeneously bonded body. Porous bodies made from powders by sintering without bonding material are united by copper, nickel, silver, cobalt, tin, or their alloys with each other or with cadmium and zinc; the sintering material diffusing into the pores. Non-metallic powders, such as ceramics, embedded in a bond of copper &c., as above, may be united to metal parts produced as described. The sections may be arranged to have different characteristics, such as hardness, specific gravity, or brittleness. The final sintering may take place in a mould of refractory material such as graphite.
