Abstract

565,212. Feeding webs. WILCOX, R. L., and WATERBURY FARREL FOUNDRY & MACHINE CO. Nov. 2, 1942, No. 15386. [Class 100 (i)] [Also in Groups XXII and XXIV] Means for intermittently rotating the feed rolls 11, 12 of a heading or other machine, comprises a toothed clutch part 28 adapted to drive the rolls, a corresponding toothed clutch part 31, which is given a predetermined rotation and can be moved axially to open and close the clutch, means 46 to ensure tooth alignment of the parts 28, 31, when being engaged, and a stop 42, which prevents control means, for closing the clutch, from being operated when the part 31 is rotating in the direction to operate the feed rolls. The part 31 has a half hub 32 engaged by a complementary half hub 61, Fig. 2, of a member 29, which is oscillated about the shaft 14, through an adjustable angle by cam mechanism 30, 55, 56 so that the part 31 is also oscillated. This part is free to be moved axially by a handle 39, shaft 34, arm 35 and a roller 37 engaging a slot 38 in the half hub 32. When the clutch 28, 31 is engaged, the oscillations are transmitted to one part 21, Fig. 1, of a roller-ratchet clutch which thus imparts intermittent clockwise rotary movement to the other part 19 and to the feed rolls 11, 12, retrograde movement being prevented by a brake 44. The aligning means may comprise a spring ratchet 46 carried by the clutch part 28 and always in engagement with the teeth of the part 31 so that counter-clockwise rotation of this part is transmitted to the parts 28, 21, but the part 19 is not affected. The stop 42 is kept in operative position by a spring 60 during the counter-clockwise movement of the part 32, whether the feed rolls are being driven or the clutch 28, 31 is open, so that an insufficient length of the workpiece cannot be fed. During the clockwise movement of the part 32, the work is not being fed and the stop 42 is withdrawn by a cam 59.
