Abstract

Nuclear-substituted dichlorostyrenes are prepared by converting dichlorobenzaldehydes to be dichlorophenylmethyl carbinols with a methyl Grignard reagent and dehydrating the carbinols over activated alumina at 300-350 DEG C. under low subatmospheric pressures. Examples give the preparation of 2,3-, 2,4-, 2,5-, 2,6-, 3,4-, and 3,5-dichlorostyrenes. They are identified by oxidation to the corresponding dichlorobenzoic acids. They can be polymerized to thermoplastic resins which resist combustion and thermal deformation. Specification 564,829 is referred to.
