Abstract

563,774. Photo-electric meters. SANGAMO WESTON, Ltd. Feb. 25, 1943, No. 3081. Convention date, April 16, 1942. [Class 40 (iii)] In order to measure the intensity of light beams in predetermined spectral ranges, two or more photo-electric cells, each having a spectral sensitivity curve differing from the desired curve, and at least one having a light filter to give it a certain sensitivity curve, are subjected to the same radiation and are connected in parallel or in series in addition or in opposition to a measuring instrument, so that the instrument is made to give indications in accordance with the intensity of the radiation in the desired spectral range. For example, to measure the ultra-violet content of a radiation, two photo-electric cells having a sensitivity curve A, Fig. 1, are used. One photo-cell 10, Fig. 2, is provided with an ultra-violet filter 11, which has the sensitivity curve B, B<1>, Fig. 1. The second photo-cell 10A is provided with a filter 11A, which has the sensitivity curve B<1> only. The two cells are both subjected to the radiation to be measured, and are connected in opposition to a measuring instrument 14 so that the output of cell 10A in accordance with curve B<1> cancels out the output of the cell 10 corresponding to the same curve B\ and the measuring instrument indicates only the output of the cell 10 corresponding to the curve B, that is indicates only the ultra-violet content of the radiation. In another example, one cell may be made to have a sensitivity curve F1, Fig. 8, and a second cell the sensitivity curve F2, so that both cells when connected give a sensitivity curve (F1 +F2), Fig. 9 ; and a third cell is provided having a sensitivity curve F3 and is so connected as to change the overall sensitivity to a desired curve E. The cells may be arranged side by side or one cell may be over another, in which case, the upper cell must be smaller than the one below or must have one or more perforations to allow the radiation to pass to the cell below.
