Abstract

562,835. Brazing cycle &c. frames. COVENTRY-EAGLE CYCLE & MOTOR CO., Ltd., and WOODMAN, A. C. April 5, 1943, No. 5391. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] In making tubular structures such as cycle and motor cycle frames, the ends of the members are first loaded with brazing material, then assembled in their relative positions by lugs or brackets and structure pivotally mounted and the joints are then passed in succession through a brazing furnace or muffle by rotating the structure on its mounting. The tubes b, c, d at the ends which fit in the bottom bracket h are provided with inner and outer flanged plugging discs k between which the brazing material is contained. The end of each member is drilled at i to enable the brazing material to find its way into the joint. The tube a is provided with a single plugging disc k at the end which is inserted in the lug e at the top of the seat pillar tube. The parts after assembly are clamped between pairs of bars or plates q. arranged so that the clamping bolt r is equidistant from the several joints of the frame. The frame may then be rotated by hand or power about the axis r in a bracket arranged near a brazing furnace so as to braze the joints in turn. In a modification, brackets s in which the clamping plates q are mounted are secured at intervals on an endless conveyer t so that the frames can be passed through a series of furnaces u. As one frame leaves a furnace it is turned on the axis r to present another joint to,the next furnace. The turning may be effected automatically by fixed projections arranged alongside the conveyer and engaging the frames. The plugs may be replaced by cartridges m containing brazing material and closed at the open end by caps n, the cylinders having an annular groove formed with holes o at opposite sides thereof.
