Abstract

562,341. Electric supply systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., BRAY, F. H., and NEWTON, F. E. Dec. 23, 1942, No. 18229. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Groups XXXVII and XL] An arrangement for periodically making and breaking an electric circuit, adapted for adjustment of the make to break ratio independently of the frequency, comprises a first relay timed by a condenser charging and discharging circuit, preferably as described in Specification 557,852, [Group XXXVII], and controlling directly or indirectly the operation of a second relay which makes and breaks the said circuit. The frequency is adjusted by the timing of the first relay, whereas the ratio is adjusted independently by the timing of the second relay which is preferably operated over a gas-filled discharge tube ionized by potential built up on a condenser under control of the first relay. In the arrangement shown, P is a relay which operates and releases periodically in a circuit arrangement substantially as described in Specification 557,852, the circuit being controlled by contacts of PP and PR which are dependent on P. The impulses are produced by relay PR dependent on PP and, therefore, P. The frequency of impulsing may be adjusted by varying the circuit constants of P (components R1-R3 and condenser C1), but all these components vary the ratio as well as the frequency. Resistance R2 is therefore used to vary the frequency. and the circuit RR is adjusted to vary the ratio of the impulses ultimately produced with PP in the condition shown, condenser C2 is uncharged and RR unoperated, but when PP changes over, C2 is charged at an adjustable rate over Rs and RR is connected to the anode of discharge tube T which strikes and operates RR when the condenser has been charged to a predetermined potential. RR is held operated until P and PP release. The unoperated period of RR may therefore be varied by adjustment of R15. Any variation of the frequency by adjustment of R2 requires adjustment of R5, but the period required to operate RR must not exceed the period during which P closes its contacts and operates PP. The Specification gives an example of the values of the circuit components.
