Abstract

562,130. Teaching shooting with machine guns. BAKANOWSKI, Z. DE LUBICZ-, and SUK, R. Sept. 12,'1942, No. 12878. [Class 119] A dummy machine gun comprises means whereby, on pulling the trigger, an electrical target-marking device, associated with a targetcarrying metal plate mounted on the gun, is energized intermittently so long as the trigger is held, to represent the firing of a series of shots. At the same time an impact member or members in the gun is, or are, actuated to produce vibrations and noise similar to those produced by actual firing. In the form shown in Figs. 9a, 9b, aim is taken at a target 407 on a target frame 378, fixed relatively to the gun mounting, and an electric needle 324 is projected forwards at each simulated discharge to make contact with a duplicate target 407a mounted on a metal plate 277 below the target 407. The needle and plate are in a high-tension electric circuit so that each time the needle makes contact with the target 407a a spark passes through the target and marks thereon the result of the shot. The needle 324 is carried by a lever-arm 322 pivoted at 323 on a bracket 319 mounted rigidly on the muzzle end of the barrel 201 of the dummy gun. A link 321 connects the arm 322 with the pivoted armature 320 of an electromagnet 316 which is energized intermittently through an interrupter in the gun driven by an electric motor 210 through a flexible shaft 211. A cam 328 on the bracket 319 operates through a rod 327 and bell-crank 325 to compensate for the different displacements of the needle relatively to the line of aim as the gun is elevated or depressed. In addition to driving the interrupter switch devices, the shaft 211 is connected to a cam-shaft which displaces spring-pressed weights within the gun and then releases them so that they fly back and jar the connection 345, 348 between the gun body and the elevating.screw, and also impact with a diaphragm in the body to simulate the noise of discharge. The motor circuit is initially closed by a switch 300 operated by a safety-slide 501, and the flexible shaft 211 is connected to the interrupter and cam-shaft within the gun by a clutch operated by the trigger 260 through links 260a, 259, 258. In a modification, a solenoid within the gun body is energized when the trigger is pulled, and its core provides the movable element of the interrupter switch as well as the impact member. In this case, the marking needle is located behind the aiming target coincident with the line of aim, and marks a recording target which is a mirror image of the aiming target. The metal target-carrying plate may be swung upwards about a horizontal hinge to enable aiming at real objects to be practised.
