Abstract

561,945. Flexible abrasive sheets. CARBORUNDUM CO. Oct. 15, 1942, No. 14469. Convention date, Dec. 29, 1941. [Class 60] Abrasive sheet material is made by introducing abrasive grains into a dispersion of dry, separated fibres, forming the mixture of fibres 'and grains into a web, impregnating the web with an adhesive and compressing. Cardable fibres are separated and delivered by a doffing brush 3 into an air current 6 produced by a blower 7, and abrasive grains are showered from a hopper 12 into the air-dispersed fibres in a deposition chamber 10. The fibres and grains collect as a web on an endless moving foraminous belt 15 under the influence of suction produced by air entering conduit 22 leading to the suction side of the blower 7, and the web is initially compacted between rolls 19 and 20, is further compacted and saturated with adhesive by rolls 24, 25 of which 25 dips into adhesive in a tank 26, and finally carried in festoons through a drying or curing chamber. The feed gate 13 of hopper 12 may be magnetically vibrated, an air jet 14 may be provided to regulate the direction and velocity of the shower of abrasive grains, and a further hopper for introducing abrasive grains may be provided near rolls 19, 20. The endless foraminous belt-may be replaced by a wire screen which can be slid into position to receive the fibres and abrasive grains and withdrawn and replaced when a sufficient thickness has been collected. Cotton, wool, jute, flax, glass fibres, resinous or synthetic rubber-like fibres may be used, the abrasive grains may be silicon carbide, fused aluminium oxide, flint, corundum, emery, or rouge ranging in size from polishing powder to coarse grit, and the adhesive may be glue plasticised with glycerine and/or natural or synthetic rubber, vulcanized latex, a resin, such as phenol-formaldehyde, or sodium silicate. Modifying agents for water-proofing, reducing friction, making brittle or flexible, may be added. One side of the web may be impregnated with a resilient and flexible binder, the other with a brittle binder. Dry powdered fillers or binding agent may be added in a manner similar to the abrasive grains. Specification 555,640 is referred to.
