Abstract

A composition suitable for use in the manufacture of filaments, films, sheets and coatings, comprises a synthetic linear polyamide plasticized with a mixture consisting of a phenol and a neutral completely esterified ester of a carboxylic acid in which at least one of the alcohol residues is the residue of an aliphatic carboalkoxy alcohol, wherein the organic radical connecting the alcoholic hydroxyl and the carboalkoxyl group contains not more than 6 carbon atoms. The plasticizers may be incorporated with the polyamides by solution in a common solvent, or by melt blending. Many polyamides, many phenolic plasticizers and many neutral esters are specified. Examples are given of compositions comprising: (1) an interpolyamide from hexamethylene diammonium adipate, hexamethylene diammonium sebacate and caprolactam, plasticized with 1 : 12-di-(hydroxyphenyl)octadecane and butyl carbobutoxymethyl phthalate; (2) the interpolyamide of example 1, plasticized with 2 - (4 - butoxyphenyl) - 2 - (4 - hydroxyphenyl)propane and butyl carbobutoxymethylphthalate; (3) the interpolyamide of example 1, plasticized with 1 : 12-di-(hydroxyphenyl)octadecane and di - (carboisobutoxymethyl)maleate; (5) an interpolyamide from hexamethylene diammonium adipate and caprolactam, plasticized with 1 : 12-di-(hydroxyphenyl)octadecane and butyl carbobutoxymethyl phthalate; (7) an interpolyamide from hexamethylene diammonium adipate and 12-aminostearic acid, plasticized with 1 : 12-di-(hydroxyphenyl)octadecane and butyl carbobatoxymethyl phthalate; (8) the interpolyamide of example 1, plasticized with 1 : 12-di-(hydroxyphenyl)octadecane and carbobutoxymethyl octanoate; (9) an interpolymer from hexamethylenediammonium adipate, hexamethylene diammonium sebacate, and the salt from equivalent amounts of piperazine and adipic acid, plasticized with 1 : 12-di-(hydroxyphenyl)octadecane and butyl carbobutoxymethyl phthalate; (10) the interpolymer of example 1, plasticized with methyl 10-(hydroxyphenyl)stearate and butyl carbobutoxymethyl phthalate. Specified optional ingredients of the compositions are pigments, carbon black, ethanol, methanol, water and chloroform. The compositions may be used in the production of yarns, fabrics, bristles, rods, films, sheets, safety glass interlayers, adhesives, electrical insulations, moulded articles, and impregnating and coating compositions.
